The Prepared Angler is run by one person on the Emerald Coast. The short version: we collect as little as we can get away with, we never sell anything to anyone, and you can have any of it deleted by asking.
What we collect, and why
Nothing at all, if you just read the site
You can check conditions, read the forecast, browse beaches and use the fishing map without giving us anything identifying. No account, no login.
Anonymous usage analytics
We record page views and a few interactions (which map layers get opened, which searches return nothing) so we know what is worth building. Each browser gets a random ID stored on your device — it is not linked to your name, email or any account, and clearing your browser storage resets it. We also run Google Analytics, which sets its own cookies.
Your email address, only if you give it
If you sign up for the Friday Fishing Brief we store the address you typed and the area you selected. We use it to send the brief. We do not sell, rent, or share our list, and every email is one you can reply to.
Push notifications, only if you enable them
If you turn on go-day alerts, your browser creates a push subscription — a random endpoint URL issued by your browser vendor — which we store so we can send you an alert. It does not identify you. Turning notifications off in your browser, or telling us to, ends it.
Location, only when you tap something that needs it
"Near me" and the beach reality check ask your browser for your location. We never ask for it in the background and we never track you over time. For a beach check-in we use the coordinates once, on the server, to work out whether you are actually at that beach, and we store only the answer — "verified", "outside", or "unavailable". Your raw coordinates are never written to our database. "Near me" happens entirely in your browser and is never sent to us at all.
Reports you choose to submit
If you tap a beach reality check or tell us whether you fished, we store that report with the random device ID, the place, and the time. These are the observations that make the site's read better for the next person.
Payments
Paid features are currently switched off. If they return, card details are handled by Stripe and never touch our servers.
Who else sees it
We use a small number of services to run the site, and they process data on our behalf: Netlify (hosting), Supabase (database), Google Analytics (usage stats), Sentry (crash reports) and Stripe (payments, when enabled). Weather, tide and hazard data comes from NOAA, the National Weather Service and Open-Meteo — we send them nothing about you. Some pages embed third-party maps and webcams, which see your IP address the way any website you visit does.
We have never sold personal data and will not.
How long we keep it
Email addresses: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Push subscriptions: until you turn notifications off, or they expire on their own. Anonymous analytics and reports: kept as an ongoing record, because the whole point is comparing what was predicted to what actually happened — but they are not tied to a person.
Getting your data removed
Email support@thepreparedangler.com and say what you want removed. If it is an email address or a push subscription, we can find it and delete it. Anonymous reports are harder to trace back to a person by design — if you still want yours gone, tell us roughly when and where you submitted and we will do our best.
Children
This site is meant for adults planning trips. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If this changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the new version goes up here.
